AO Hand Fixation Courses Since the foundation of the AO (ASIF) in 1958, courses have been offered through AO and AO International which relate to all areas of fixation (long bone, spinal column, pelvis, craniofacial, hand and foot). The care of fractures is first demonstrated with instructional videos. Then, under the guidance of the course leader, guest speakers and instructors, the course participants can carry out the fixation procedures on synthetic bones with fractures equivalent to those previously shown. Instruments and implants are utilized in the instructional videos and hands-on exercises that correspond to the most modern fixation techniques of the AO. In this way, doctors and nurses can be trained in the most modern fixation techniques such as the use and care of implants and instruments. Since the beginning of these courses in Switzerland, courses have taken place all over the world. A team of doctors (course leaders, guest speakers and instructors) and technicians travels with the complete and very extensive course material to each course location in order to train the participants. The transport of the materials is expensive and often complicated (e.g. custom regulations), but at any rate less expensive than the travel costs of participants to Switzerland. I have been an active participant in the AO fixation courses since 1990 and have had frequent opportunities to meet and exchange fixation information with colleagues from all over the world: |
